Works and Tradition of Joseph Pilates Celebrated in Big Bear

This September, some of the biggest names in Pilates—including Jay Grimes and Kathryn Ross Nash (Editor’s note: Not Kathy Grant, as we mistakenly published in last month’s newsletter)—will gather in Big Bear Lake, California, for a weekend Pilates intensive to celebrate and teach the work of Joseph Pilates. The intensive, presented by Siri Galliano’s Live Art Pilates, will cover the entire system: the Reformer, Cadillac, Barrels, Wunda Chair, High Chair, Pedipole, Magic Circle, Magic Square for the head, mat exercises and more.

When: September 15–16, 2007
Where: Northwood Resorts, Big Bear Lake, California

Post-Baby Body

In the September/October issue of Pilates Style, Pilates superstar (and supermom) Brooke Siler tells us about how she successfully got her hot body back after the births of each of her two children. It took work, but with the regimen she developed, she was back in shape before her babies could say, “Hot mama.”

For the full workout, check out the magazine. But here’s one extra exercise, for newsletter subscribers only, that will help trim the waistline, strengthen the obliques and tighten the outer hips. It also helps realign the body after toting that kid around on one hip all day.

Modified Side Bends with Light Weight
1.         Lie on your side, propped up on your elbow, with your bottom leg bent at a right angle to body (90 degrees at hip and at knee). Keep your top leg straight and in line with your body and your top hand outstretched on your thigh, holding a light (2 lb.) hand weight. Turn your head to look down your leg.

Modified Side Bend

2.         Inhale and lift waist toward ceiling, bringing outstretched arm overhead alongside ear and turning head to look to floor. Hold breath and position for a count of 3. Exhale as you slowly lower back to starting position.

Modified Side Bend 2

Advanced progression: Straighten both legs and place one foot on top of the other.

Tips: Initiate by pressing into your elbow and bottom knee. Imagine being pulled up to the ceiling by a rope around your hips. Resist gravity on the way back down. Keep neck long and bottom shoulder away from ear. Do three extra reps on the weaker side.

Pilates on the Bayou

Two years ago, when Erin Romney had evacuated to Mississippi as her beloved New Orleans became submerged in water, she never could have imagined she’d be in the position she’s in now. At that point, her two-month-old studio, Romney Pilates Center, was just getting off the ground. Today, it’s a vibrant and thriving business with nine Pilates instructors, three yoga instructors, four massage therapists and a meditation teacher. But more importantly, it’s a place of refuge for a city still recovering from disaster.

Since Hurricane Katrina and all its related struggles—the belabored reconstruction efforts, the spike in the city’s crime rates, the scarcity of housing and resources—people who are attempting to rebuild their lives in the city have a new set of priorities, Romney has observed. “There’s a need for people to have structure and relaxation,” she says. “They’re focusing on themselves a little more.”

Romney Pilates Center is the perfect place for them to do that. Having had the good fortune of being located in the Uptown district, where storm damage was minimal in comparison to the rest of the city, Romney was able to reopen her studio quickly after the storm. Even though she was in France, several of her instructors had moved back to New Orleans and started up business as soon as they were able. “We were near one of the first- to-open coffee shops,” Romney recalls, “and we were lucky to draw clients from that as they trickled back into the city.” Romney, too, missed her city and returned after two months teaching in Paris to begin to rebuild her business.

After a few months, the studio had so many clients that Romney decided it was time to relocate to a bigger space. The move gave her an opportunity to go green, which had always been a goal of hers. She built her new space with two goals: to make it ecologically sound and to make it beautiful. The space maximizes natural light, giving it a bright and modern feel, and Romney opted for renewable materials like bamboo and cork flooring whenever possible.

The future looks bright for Romney Pilates Center. In the works are an eco-friendly boutique and an elixir bar, and down the road Romney hopes to open studios elsewhere in New Orleans where Pilates doesn’t currently have a foothold. She has high hopes for the growth of her city, and she plans to do all she can to make it a healthy and vital place. “I stayed here through the bad,” Romney recalls, “and I’m going to stay here through the good. I’m committed.”

Editor’s note: See the November/December issue of ‘Pilates Style’ to read more about Erin Romney’s success story.

Close-up: Scissors
By Linda Farrell (lindafit.com)

Scissoring the legs while maintaining the strength and stability of the shoulders, trunk and pelvis provides a wonderful stretch for the hip flexors and hip extensors and an intense stability challenge as the base of support has been reduced. This exercise works on flexion, extension and stabilization

Set-up: Lie on your back with your legs straight up at a 90-degree angle to the mat, arms by the sides. Curl up through the pelvis, and lift the legs up and over the head toward the ceiling, while bringing the hands to support the back of the hips. The thumbs and fingers can stay together, or the thumbs can wrap to the front of the pelvic crest, depending on what is most comfortable. From shoulders, elbows to wrists, the arms form 90-degree angles, supporting the weight of the trunk, pelvis and legs. There should not be any undue weight on the neck.

Begin the move: Engage the abdominals strongly. Inhaling, reach one leg back toward the body, the other forward toward the mat. Stabilize through the trunk and pelvis and move slowly to the point where the legs balance each other out in a “split.” Then start to rhythmically pulse the legs twice in place, and then switch, splitting the legs in opposite directions for another two pulses. Continue to switch, inhaling on one set of pulses and exhaling on the next set. Perform 3 to 6 sets.

Visualization: Imagine yourself doing the exercise on the small barrel. Use your core stabilization strength to recreate the same solid base of support through your shoulders, trunk and pelvis as your legs start to scissor. As you move through the repetitions, try to balance the opposing scissoring actions of the legs rhythmically—like a metronome, to avoid falling over one way or the other.

Tips:

  • Make sure the body weight is balanced properly, without undue strain on the neck, shoulders, elbows or wrists.
  • The shoulders, trunk and pelvis must stabilize; watch for elbows splaying out and the body weight collapsing down.
  • The lower back must not overextend as the legs scissor; engage the abdominals to form a corset of support and protection around the abdomen and lower back.
  • Look for smooth, balanced actions in the legs; the trunk and pelvis stabilize better and the muscles stretch more evenly.
  • To ensure pelvic stability, keep the legs parallel and bend them slightly to accommodate hamstring tightness.
  • Even with proper form and technique, lack of adequate core strength and stability can result in straining at the neck, shoulders and wrists, as well as the collapse of the body’s weight. If this happens, omit this advanced exercise for now and build more core strength with beginner to intermediate mat exercises that use a greater base of support.
