Best Business Advice, Part 2
Lisa Johnson

In the March/April issue, reporter and studio owner Lisa Johnson interviewed some of the greats about the business of Pilates and asked them to share the best advice they’d ever received. The article gives you the whole story, but Lisa saved some great advice just for e-newsletter subscribers.

Grow slowly. Zoey Trap, owner of Inner Space in Avon, CT, admits to being the first to think big. “I’m a Tigger. I jump,” she says. “We all get so excited and passionate about sharing our knowledge and our love that we sometimes jump in blindly and move very quickly. Luckily we learn through failure.” Her advice to people new to the biz: “Step back and put a good plan in place that addresses how you are going to grow. We don’t just plant down a big studio in a day.”

Hit every level. Brent Anderson, president of Polestar Pilates, urges new pros to “make sure you have a product available to all levels of Pilateros.” He’s put that advice into practice at his Miami facility. “We have a pretty large variety of classes at all different levels for people—some who are a little older and have more special needs,” he says. It’s important to make people feel welcome too. “People can come in for a free class and then we put them through an introductory package where we can have a private screening where we can take into consideration their finances and their time. We can then place them in the appropriate class,” he notes.

Focus on what you want. Just like the cult-hit film The Secret says, our success lies in our intentions. Kelly Kane, founder of the Kane School of Core Integration in New York City, has seen that in action. “Whatever I put my focus on is what actualizes,” she says. “For many years I put my focus on the content of my business, the content of my teacher training, the tone of how I present it in the world. I was a good listener and could really see my clients.” That’s the core of her business (so to speak), but financial success came only after she placed her intention on it: “I just started to put my focus on making money,” she says.

It’s all in a word. “Communications skills are super, super critical,” says Ken Endelman, founder and president of Balanced Body, the world’s largest Pilates equipment manufacturing company. That means at all levels of business. “When I talk to my salespeople, it’s the same thing as a Pilates instructor,” he says. “You have to communicate not only the exercises and how to cue people, but you have to be able to communicate comfort. The really, really good instructors communicate allegiance to the studio.”

The client rules! “It’s a service-oriented business, and even though you have a specialized talent, you are, from the client’s perspective, giving them a service,” says Mari Winsor, Pilates video superstar and founder of Winsor Pilates in Los Angeles. It’s the age-old “the client is always right” advice, and it pays off, according to Mari. “Look at the big picture. Don’t argue with clients,” she advises. That goes for the difficult ones, too. If you have a disagreement over whether a client has paid for a lesson, for instance, just let it go. “The more you remove yourself from that paranoia of getting the money in, the more your business thrives.”

Go with the flow. It might not be popular business advice, but Pilates elder Mary Bowen, founder of Your Own Gym, Northampton, MA, and Sherwood Studio, Killingworth, CT, advises new studio owners to lighten up on the goals. “It’s a unique position, but my advice is to never make a deadline,” she says. “Go into it with your own heart and leave it open-ended.” Most important, she adds, you should run your business “from the spirit of the thing, and not just from numbers.

Cinco de Pilates
By Amanda Altman

To the average Joe, May 5th may not mean much more than an excuse to drink margaritas, but to the followers of Joe Pilates—instructors and enthusiasts alike—it’s an international day of celebration of our favorite workout method. The ever-growing event, founded in 2004 by the Pilates Method Alliance, started out with just a handful of activities. This year, there will be upwards of 300 events worldwide. The day of commemoration and celebration is a wonderful way to promote health and wellness with fun and a sense of community. This year’s national event, Camp Pilates 2007, takes place in Coconut Grove, FL, and features classes from top instructors along with fitness activities like kayaking and sailing. Pilates Around Town

Here’s a surefire sign you’ve made it into the mainstream: You’re in an ad on the New York City subway. On her commute from Brooklyn, one of our intrepid reporters recently observed a Jet Blue subway ad suggesting ways to make use of their planes’ extra legroom. The evidence that we’ve arrived? This advice from the airline’s marketing team: “Touch your toes. Do a set of lunges to strengthen your thighs for the hills of San Francisco. Pilates anyone?”
