does size matter?

A look at large mat classes

Q: Can I get a true Pilates workout in a large Pilates class at my gym or studio?

Linda Farrell responds: Interestingly, larger group Pilates mat classes are a new phenomenon. Traditionalists have been skeptical-and rightfully so-that one could receive the same benefits in a large group setting as in a one-on-one session or small group. After all, the genius of the Pilates method lies in the details, and those can be harder to convey to a large group of mixed abilities.

As a customer seeking out a Pilates mat class, I would make sure the teacher offers a lot of detailed information, including proper modifications and appropriate instruction and explanation. Classes that include teacher's assistants who help correct students can also be beneficial: Corrections and reminders on proper technique are a must if you want to improve, no matter what the class size. Be wary of teachers who perform the entire class with their students. Well-trained teachers walk around their classes so they can offer students proper corrections and modifications. They may model some of the more complex moves, but they should not do the whole class with you.

Many fitness facilities are recognizing the varying levels of students and have developed beginner, intermediate and advanced Pilates mat classes. If you are new to Pilates, ask the instructor if there are more experienced pupils in the class who you could set your mat near. Listen to each correction that is made, even if it is not directed at you, and see if it is something that you too could benefit from. If you have any questions on the technique, ask your instructor after class, or supplement your large class sessions with the occasional private or small group lesson.
